The site was historically a gathering place for native Americans, and later pioneers and early settlers of the Las Vegas Valley. When the Las Vegas townsite was laid out in 1905, the springs supplied water for the town and the railroad. Pipe lines were laid, reservoirs constructed and wells were drilled, causing the surface water to recede. Today, the site is owned by the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, and is undergoing a large rehabilitation incorporating interpretive exhibits for the remaining architectural and archeological resources.

<TD vAlign=top> <A href="/images/Underpass-11.jpg" target=_blank><IMG height=78 alt="Bonanza Underpass" src="/images/Underpass-11.jpg" width=119></A></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The underpass, constructed in 1936 in the art deco style, represents the symbolic “opening up” of the Westside, now called West Las Vegas, after 31 years of being physically separated from the east side of Las Vegas by the Union Pacific railroad tracks.  Since 1905 when the Westside was settled, then called the McWilliams Townsite, relations between the two communities had been hindered by dangerous crossings over the railroad tracks, delaying water and sewer services, electric lighting and commercial trade.  The construction of the underpass was a civic attempt to ease the straining relationship between the east and west communities, and a means to facilitate infrastructure improvement on the Westside.

<TD vAlign=top> <A href="/images/5thStSchool3.jpg" target=_blank><IMG height=67 alt="5th Street School" src="/images/5thStSchool3.jpg" width=120></A></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The Las Vegas Grammar School, or “Fifth Street School” was built in 1936 and is one of the only remaining intact Mission style building of its era.  The school was built using federal funds as part of a building program to alleviate a population boom in Las Vegas.  Built before air-conditioning, the building design allowed for air-flow, incorporating a center courtyard with fountain.  Currently the building is owned by the City of Las Vegas, and is being rehabilitated for cultural use.

<TD vAlign=top> <A href="/images/TuleSpr1.jpg" target=_blank><IMG height=90 alt="Tule Springs" src="/images/TuleSpr1.jpg" width=120></A></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Tule Springs Ranch is located at Floyd Lamb State Park.  The ranch includes a collection of 23 buildings, mostly constructed in the 1940s as a “dude ranch” for people seeking residency for a quick divorce.  It is significant for its association with the Las Vegas “divorce industry” which ultimately had a profound effect on the State and the Nation.  The buildings remain the best example of a divorce ranch remaining in Nevada and the U.S.

<P align=left>Work began on the house in 1930, and was completed 10 years later by Frank Wait, a one-time prospector, city marshal, undersheriff, security guard and police chief.  He and his wife spent many years searching for colorful stones, semi precious gems, petroglyphs and petrified wood with which to decorate the house.  It is a unique structure and superb example of vernacular architecture, and has been well-preserved by subsequent owners. </P>

<P>The home of Frank Wait would seem to qualify as an historic landmark within the meaning of that set forth in the historic preservation ordinance of the City of Las Vegas under section 4, subsection G, paragraphs (3), articles (b) “serves as a valuable example of indigenous materials of craftsmanship,” (d) “represents a rare building type, style, design or indigenous building form,” and (e) “is identifiable with [a person] or [event] significant in local, state or national history.” </P>
<P>To deal first with the historical significance of Frank Wait, it should be said that he was not per se a “mover an shaker” during the forty-five years or so that he lived in southern Nevada.  He was, instead, more of an outstanding exemplar of a type of “character” associated with early day Las Vegas.  He was more of a throwback to the frontier lawman like his contemporaries, Sam Gay and Joe Keate. </P>
<P>Wait was born in South Dakota in 1880 and, after knocking around the West and mid-West, arrived in Reno in 1902.  In 1905, he joined the prospectors and gold seekers thronging to the boom camps of Tonopah and Goldfield.  From Goldfield he went to El Dorado Canyon in 1906.  He spent the next eight years working a gold deposit across the Colorado River in Arizona.  Moving to Las Vegas in 1915, he became the city’s first Marshall, patrolling the streets on an old black mare named “Nancy Hanks”.  Most of his working years were thereafter spend in law enforcement of one kind or another.  In 1919, he became under-sheriff to Sheriff Sam Gay.  It was also in that year that his association with the story of the supposed Indian “renegade” Queho began.  Queho was alleged to have killed several persons and was tracked unsuccessfully across the southern Nevada desert for forty-five days by Frank Wait and police officer Joe May.  (In 1940, bones found in a cave near the Colorado River were “identified” by Waits as those of Queho.) </P>
<P>Wait served as under-sheriff until 1927, when he became captain of the guard at the Nevada State Prison in Carson City.  Returning to Las Vegas in 1930 he was defeated in an election for sheriff that year and again in 1934.  During that period he served as a “security guard” in local casinos, including the Boulder Club on Fremont Street.  He again became under-sheriff in 1936, was dismissed in 1938, and briefly served as police chief beginning in 1939 before again being dismissed in 1941.  (Wait’s being dismissed on several occasions should not be taken as indication of his performance as an officer of the law.  Police and sheriff’s positions were highly politicized in those years.  In 1941, for example, he said that he refused to close the houses of prostitution on “Block 16” because he was obeying a court injunction.  He was fired for non-feasance by the city commission, which had ordered him to move against the houses.) </P>
<P>Following his law career, Wait served for a time as game warden of Clark County before retiring to his recently completed home on Ninth Street.  He died there in January 1950. </P>
<P>Wait began working on the home on Ninth Street in 1930 and worked on it off and on for over ten years.  He and his wife spent many years searching for colorful stones, semi precious gems, petroglyphs and petrified wood with which to decorate it.  The Review Journal in 1948 already referred to the house as “tourist showplace” and “landmark”.  A one-of-a-kind structure, it is a superb example vernacular architecture and craftsmanship.  It has been remarkable well preserved by subsequent owners.  Additions to the property have been made in keeping with the original style and materials. </P>

<P>The Henderson House was designed and built by architect A. L. Worswick in 1930 in the Mission Revival style for Nevada State Senator Albert Scott Henderson and his family. Albert Scott Henderson was born in 1879 in Eureka, Nevada. Henderson started as a rural school teacher, attended the University of Nevada, Reno for a time and later took a job as a law clerk for Judge Breen in Eureka. In 1908, he was admitted to the Nevada State Bar and also elected district attorney in Eureka. <BR><BR>After the Eureka bank failure, which took the Hendersons’ life savings, he and his wife came to Las Vegas in 1910 where he found work as a school teacher. He became superintendent of schools in 1918 for the fledgling Las Vegas School District. In the 1920’s, he served in the Nevada Assembly for six years and was named Speaker of the Assembly.<BR><BR>Architect A. L. Worswick became one of the most prominent architects in the city, soon after arriving in 1929. He had previously served as the San Francisco planning department’s chief architect. He designed many of Las Vegas’ early residences and commercial buildings, including the Apache Hotel (now under the Horseshoe).<BR></P>

Park Historic District" hspace=10 src="/images/5thPl_1107a.jpg" width=115 align=right vspace=5></A>This neighborhood was named for Mr. John S. Park, a Las Vegas pioneer who arrived in the city in 1905 at the age of 53 to serve as cashier and eventually owner of the First State Bank. In 1906 he organized and became the first president of the Consolidated Power and Telephone Company, which eventually became Southern Nevada Power Company. His home was located south of Charleston Boulevard near S. 7th Street.  <BR><BR>The John S. Park Historic District includes two subdivisions, the Park Place Addition and the Vega Verde Addition, built primarily between the early 1930s to the mid 1950s.  The majority of the homes in the Vega Verde Addition were built in the Ranch and Minimal Traditional styles, popular during the 1940s and 1950s when most of this subdivision was built. The Minimal Traditional style evolved in the mid-1930s as a simplified version of the earlier Period Revival styles with slightly lower pitched roofs and less traditional detailing. The Ranch style began to replace the Minimal Traditional in popularity during the early 1940s and became the preferred post-war suburban house style. This style, influenced by the Spanish and Prairie styles of the 1920s and 1930s, is typically one-story and characterized by very low-pitched roofs and broad, rambling facades with a horizontal emphasis. Developers Franklin & Law, owned by George Franklin and John Law, built most of the homes in the Vega Verde Addition. Franklin & Law offered a choice of four models if homebuyers did not have their own plans. The homes were mostly Ranch style and sold for $4,000 to $12,000.<BR><BR>Today the John S. Park neighborhood is designated on the city of Las Vegas Historic Property Register and the state and National Register of Historic Places. It is a thriving community of young professionals and long-time residents alike.<BR>

<P>The La Concha Motel was originally constructed in 1961 on the Las Vegas “Strip,” just south of the existing Riviera Hotel and Casino. The motel property included the free-form concrete shell lobby, and a rectangular two-story motel building attached to the rear of the lobby. The motel building was demolished in 2004 to make way for a new high-rise development, as yet to be built. It was designed by internationally known African-American architect Paul R. Williams (1894-1980), one of the foremost architects of southern California. He produced an incredible number of buildings in his career that spanned almost 60 years. Williams designed more than 2,000 private residences and many major civic and commercial buildings in southern California and elsewhere.</P>

As music director for the Sands, he came into contact with America’s top performers of the day like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis, Jr.  The Morelli House was moved to its permanent location in 2001, after which it was listed on the Nevada State Register of Historic Places.  It is currently the headquarters of the Junior League of Las Vegas, and is undergoing an interior rehabilitation.

<TD vAlign=top> <A href="/images/MormonFort01.jpg" target=_blank><IMG height=93 alt="Mormon Fort" src="/images/MormonFort01.jpg" width=118></A></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The Mormon Fort is the oldest inhabited building in Nevada, originally constructed in 1855 by Mormon missionaries sent to Las Vegas to establish a colony and way station for travelers.  Two years later the fort was abandoned by the Mormons and eventually purchased by Octavius Gass who developed it as a large ranch.  Ownership passed on to the Stewart family who eventually sold the ranch to the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad in 1902.  Today, the fort and dwelling has undergone major reconstruction and serves as a museum and visitor’s center.

<TD vAlign=top> <A href="/images/MoulinRouge01.jpg" target=_blank><IMG height=97 alt="Moulin Rouge" src="/images/MoulinRouge01.jpg" width=130></A></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The Moulin Rouge Hotel and Casino opened in 1955 and was Las Vegas’ first interracial entertainment facility.  Designed by architects Zick and Sharp, the casino boasted an impressive modern design, topped only by the huge neon sign in sweeping pink script.  Although the hotel was only open for five months, stars such as Sammy Davis, Jr., the Platters, Maurice and Gregory Hines, Lionel Hampton and Dinah Washington performed there.  The casino suffered a fire in 2003 and all that remains is the front façade and famous sign.  The hotel buildings were not touched.  Plans for redevelopment are being considered.

<TD vAlign=top> <A href="/images/RailroadCot01.jpg" target=_blank><IMG height=84 alt="Railroad Cottages" src="/images/RailroadCot01.jpg" width=120></A></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>The railroad cottages were built between 1909 and 1911 by the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad for its mid-level workers.  Sixty-four units were completed on four square blocks between Casino Center and Fourth Street, Garces and Clark.  Today, only 13 of the small, bungalow style concrete block houses remain, with one located at the Clark County Heritage Museum.  The final three of the four cottages were moved to their new home at the Las Vegas Springs Preserve in December 2005!

<TD vAlign=top> <A href="/images/WestsideSch2.jpg" target=_blank><IMG height=91 alt="Westside School" src="/images/WestsideSch2.jpg" width=122></A></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Located in the historic Westside, the “Las Vegas Grammar School Branch No. 1” was built in 1923. The building was the first grammar school in West Las Vegas and is the oldest remaining schoolhouse in Las Vegas. The school was important in the development of the Westside, serving a largely African American community. The building was added onto in the 1940s to accommodate the large wartime population increase. Today the building houses KCEP radio and serves as a community center and offices for the Economic Opportunity Board.

Westside School

The Woodlawn Cemetery located in the city of Las Vegas was formally listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 21, 2006.  The cemetery was created in 1914 when several prominent local women persuaded the Union Pacific Railroad to donate ten acres for a city cemetery. Woodlawn is an historic site along the <A href="/files/PioneerTrailBroch.pdf" target=_blank>Pioneer Trail</A><IMG src="/images/icons/icoAcrobatPDF.gif">.
<P>Several notable and colorful Las Vegans are interred at Woodlawn, including prominent local attorney Harley A. Harmon, gunslinger “Diamondfield” Jack Davis and local farmers Bill Tomiyasu, and Frank Kim. Others of note at rest in Woodlawn Cemetery are “Nick the Greek” Dandolos, a famous gambler who lost $500 million before he died penniless in 1964, and eight Civil War veterans.</P>
<P>In pre-railroad times, the Paiute Indians and the few local ranchers set aside graveyards for family use. Other deceased were placed in an informal burial ground just north of Las Vegas Ranch. The markers for these graves eventually disappeared, and the burials were forgotten. In 1914, several prominent local women persuaded the railroad to donate ten acres of Las Vegas Ranch, just south of the unofficial graveyard, to be dedicated as a city cemetery. The city accepted the gift and chose the name Woodlawn. Since 1914, any early burials discovered outside the cemetery boundaries have been re-interred here.</P>
<P>Woodlawn management chose the gravesites for black citizens until 1939, when black residents asked for the right to choose their own plots. The city allowed a delegation from the black community to choose a section of the cemetery exclusively for black burials, and promised that Woodlawn would provide proper care of the graves. </P>
<P>The cemetery was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places by the city’s <A href="/Government/boards.asp?id=4268#4268">Historic Preservation Commission</A>, a city board made up of 11 community members who make recommendations to the City Council.</P>
