SPARK is modeled after a successful program that has been established in Reno, and is now in its 10th year of operation. One of the unique aspects of this program is that it utilizes local high school students as program staff. SPARK works with Las Vegas area high schools to provide their students an opportunity to be trained by and then work alongside professional staff, obtain valuable volunteer hours and gain practical experience with children who have special needs. This is an excellent opportunity for those who wish to pursue careers in education, recreation or other related fields.
The program looks for responsible students, between the ages of 16 and 18, who are willing to offer their time (min. four hours a week for at least one semester) working with children with special needs in a recreation setting. Those students are trained in program planning, disability awareness and behavior management. Qualified professionals will be on-site to supervise and assist students and children participants during program sessions. Student assistants will eventually be responsible for planning and implementing various activities such as arts and crafts, sports activities, and fun educational programs during program sessions.

The program is open to anyone, 17 years or older, who is interested in fire service. The program is not designed for people seeking a career in fire services. Although the class provides a good overview, it is general in nature and not as technical as some fire science courses available at the community college.
The academy is divided into two classes. One class meets on Tuesday nights (Class A) and the other meets on Thursday nights (Class B). Students are required to attend only one class per week. Class times are 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
The program includes 10, three-hour classes, a required ride-along for four hours and a six-hour "hands-on" class at the fire training center, for a total of 40 hours.
The Citizens Fire Academy director is Timothy R. Szymanski, public information officer for the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Department. Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department and members of other organizations teach the academy classes.
The academy is held once each year, February through May. Applications are available during December. Candidates who are selected are notified in January. Classes begin in February.
Effective with the Class of 2004, all applicants must submit to a background check for security reasons.
If selected, academy participants must understand the following requirements:
The Las Vegas Citizens Leadership Academy (LVCLA) is designed to educate citizens who want to increase their knowledge about local government operations and have a desire to become more involved in the shaping and development of their community.
Participation in the Citizens Leadership Academy is an excellent opportunity to get an in-depth look at the roles and responsibilities of the city of Las Vegas municipal government. Through a series of interactive workshops and facility tours, 25 applicants see first hand how city services work to create livable communities. The academy's workshops also highlight programs and opportunities for residents to get involved with the city to develop creative and insightful solutions to some of the issues facing our community.
The 2007 LVCLA graduated on Wednesday, November 7, 2007. For information on future academies, please call (702) 229-6501.
