Inspired by Bruce Rogers' ride across the United States in 1987, the southern route riders of Push America's Journey of Hope cross-country bicycle trek will stop in Las Vegas June 24 and 25 to spend time with interested Las Vegans and bring encouragement to people with disabilities. Mayor Oscar B. Goodman and Ward 2 City Councilman Steve Wolfson will greet the riders at noon Thursday, June 24, at Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, to present a proclamation declaring June 24 to be Push America Day. The center is located at 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive. The ride, which begins in San Francisco June 13, raises funds and awareness for people with disabilities.
Comprised entirely of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity members, the expected group of 25 riders and six crew members will travel an average of 75 miles a day, then participate in special events that support people with disabilities. Fraternity members will put on a wheelchair basketball demonstration. The public is invited to welcome the riders and attend the wheelchair basketball demonstration at no charge.
On Friday, June 25, the Journey of Hope riders will accompany those enrolled in summer camp at Lorenzi Adaptive Recreation Center to the Lied Discovery Children's Museum and Doolittle Pool for a day of fun, returning to Lorenzi Park in the late afternoon to share a family-style barbecue. The Journey of Hope group plans to finish their ride Aug. 14 in Washington, D.C., and will have traveled approximately 4,000 miles.
Pi Kappa Phi fraternity recently awarded a $750 grant to the city of Las Vegas Adaptive Recreation program. The funds will be used to support Camp Cal, an annual five-day residential camping program for adults ages 22 and older with developmental disabilities.
