City Seeking Proposals For Development Of Downtown Arena

The city of Las Vegas later this month will request proposals from major developers to build a state-of-the-art event center to house various major sporting and entertainment events in the downtown area. The events center will be capable of accommodating an NBA or NHL franchise as well as events such as the National Finals Rodeo. Bill Rhoda with CSL International joined Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman at his weekly news conference today to discuss the plans.

The City Council approved a contract with Convention Sports and Leisure International on March 7 to provide consulting services and to solicit and evaluate proposals related to the development of a new, state-of-the-art event center. The consultant will issue the Request for Proposals on April 20, seeking a development team that has the financial capability to construct, finance and operate a state-of-the-art event center. It is the city’s goal to select a development team that maximizes the valley’s opportunity to attract a professional sports team and economic impact to the city and valley, while minimizing the public’s financial contribution to the project.

“The Thomas & Mack has served this community well, but the aging facility can no longer keep up with the growth of Las Vegas and support the type of events we can compete for,” said Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman. “Las Vegas has to keep up with the industry and develop an arena that is on the cutting edge, and that’s the kind of arena we're going to have. This arena will enable us to attract and retain a variety of events and potentially house a professional sports team.”

The city has identified several potential sites for the arena in the Redevelopment Area, including city-owned parcels.

The proposals will be due 60 days from the date the RFP is issued. After the proposals have been received, the consultants and city staff will evaluate the proposals and a list will be created of one or more of the best-qualified respondents. The consultant will formulate a recommendation or recommendations for the City Council to consider a final selection, which is expected to take place in 4-6 months.
