City Moves Forward With Rehabilitation Of Historic Fifth Street School

Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese and other officials plan to celebrate the start of renovations to the historic Fifth Street School at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 30, 2007. The school that opened in 1936 is located at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Clark Avenue.

The $9.5 million renovation project includes the installation of a new heating and air conditioning system, new electrical, plumbing and life safety systems. New interior finishes are planned along with new clay tile roofing, a new parking lot, new landscaping and restoration of exteriors to their original appearance. Renovations to the Fifth Street School are slated for completion in the second quarter of 2008.

The Las Vegas City Council, while serving as the Redevelopment Agency, recently awarded a contract to Richardson Construction to begin the renovations. The Redevelopment Agency is responsible for redevelopment activities in the city of Las Vegas. The Las Vegas City Council serves as the board of the Redevelopment Agency.

“It is exciting to see all of the ground work that was laid for this project to come together now in this final phase of renovation,” said Mayor Goodman. “We’ve worked very hard to reach this point and to have the funding in place to restore the Fifth Street School, one of Las Vegas’ treasures, to better than new condition.”

“Much of the school will be restored to its original Spanish mission style design and when work is completed this will become a cultural center featuring performance areas and gallery space, classrooms and more,” said Mayor Pro Tem Reese who represents this area of Las Vegas.

The 70-year-old building was constructed by the federal government during the Depression Era at the same time as the Hoover Dam. The facility and its site, which is owned and being redeveloped by the Redevelopment Agency, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Plans are for this 28,900 square foot building to evolve as a “cultural oasis” in the heart of downtown Las Vegas with an assortment of local art organizations as tenants including:
• Nevada School of the Arts, a non profit organization promoting music education
• University of Nevada, Las Vegas Downtown Design Center, home to the UNLV College of Fine Arts and School or Architecture
• Las Vegas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects

The city of Las Vegas Public Works Department will oversee project renovations and the Office of Business Development will manage the facilities upon completion. KGA Architecture is the architectural firm for the project. Funding is provided by the city’s Redevelopment Agency.
