During the ceremonial portion of tomorrow’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, which will take place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave., Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian will proclaim March as Women’s History Month. To celebrate this year’s national theme, “Women’s Art: Women’s Vision,” Councilwoman Tarkanian will recognize four women who have played an instrumental role in the local arts community. Those being honored include Rita Abbey, an Emeritus Professor of Art at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Cindy Funkhouser, founder of downtown’s First Friday; Roz Knight, local art teacher and gallery owner; and Marty Walsh, artist and owner of Trifecta Gallery. This recognition is part of a city initiative, which pays tribute to the diversity of our community with special events and activities.
Also during the ceremonial portion of the meeting, the City Council will swear in new Traffic Commissioner Crystal Eller-Quam. Eller-Quam, who fills a new position with the city, will hear and adjudicate traffic cases within the Las Vegas Municipal Court.
Mayor Oscar B. Goodman will proclaim March 27 to 30 as Mint 400 race days. The Mint 400 off-road race began in 1968 and became one of the biggest off-road races in the country, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators and racing champions from around the world, before ceasing operations in 1988. The race returns to southern Nevada this year with more than 300 entries in 18 classes, and kicks off with two days of registration and technical inspection in the Fremont East Entertainment District.
The City Council will also recognize Las Vegas CIO / Director of Information Technologies Joseph Marcella for being named as one of the top 25 Doers, Dreamers and Drivers by “Government Technology Magazine.” Marcella has been with the city since 1997 and has helped launch several initiatives that have improved access for citizens including the city’s Web site, which has been named third best city Web site in the nation.
Finally, the City Council will recognize the March employee of the month, Henry Jackson. Henry, who has been with the city since 1985, is a motor sweeper operator with the Field Operations Department.
