Saturday Morning Fun On April 12 At The Mutts ‘N’ Masters 5K Run And 1-Mile Fun Walk

Everyone is welcome to enjoy the fun, get some exercise and meet the neighbors at the annual Mutts ‘n’ Masters 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Walk on Saturday, April 12, at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center. The events include a competitive 5K run and a one-mile run/walk for all ages and abilities, with or without a dog. The Las Vegas Dogs in Competitive Events Club will offer dog agility demonstrations at 9:30 a.m. Vegas Valley Dog Obedience will provide dog obedience demonstrations at 10 a.m. Registration for the 5K and fun walk begins at 8 a.m. at the center, located at 101 North Pavilion Center Drive. The walk and run begin at 9 a.m., with the 5K utilizing the Cottonwood Canyon Park in Summerlin and ending at the center.

The “Masters and Muttsters” of the ceremonies will be Ward 2 Councilman Steve Wolfson and his dogs, Kobe, Magic and Sunday, and Channel 3 Weather Anchorman John Fredericks and his dog LJ.

“This is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy our community with our canine companions,” Wolfson said. “The dogs have as much fun, if not more, than the participants. For the walkers out there, the one-mile course offers a nice walk, and for the competitive runners, the 5K course is challenging and offers them a chance to beat their best time.”

For those who pre-register for the 5K run by April 11, the entry fee is only $25. The pre-registration fee for the one-mile run/walk is $20. Registration on the day of the event will be $30 for the 5K and $25 for the one-mile run/walk. Online pre-registration is encouraged at http://www.active.com/  through April 11. Pre-registration forms also may be picked up/dropped off at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center through April 11. Go online to download the form . Registrants 50 years and older will receive a 10-percent discount when registering in person with proper identification.

Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers, the top male and female finishers overall with their dogs, and the top male and female runners in each of nine age groups, in the 5K run. The one-mile fun walk is non-competitive. All two-legged participants will receive a T-shirt and a goody bag. All four-legged finishers will receive a bandana.

There is a limit of one dog per person; each animal must remain on a leash. All dogs should wear a current rabies tag and be up-to-date on all vaccinations. Please do not bring dogs "in-heat" or that may be a threat to others. Event officials reserve the right to refuse aggressive animals. Please be responsible and courteous. Be sure to clean up after your pet.

A parent or guardian must sign the liability waiver for children under 18 years of age to participate. Mutts ‘n’ Masters is sponsored by the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services. Timing results will be provided by Red Rock Running Company.
