City Council To Recognize Student Interns From Successful Batteries Included Program

During the ceremonial portion of tomorrow’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, which will take place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave., Mayor Oscar B. Goodman will recognize student interns from the Batteries Included Youth Initiative summer intern program. The program, sponsored by the city of Las Vegas, Nevada Partners and the Clark County School District, offers a series of programs to improve high school and college graduation rates and to cultivate professional young leaders in our community. Program participants are currently working as summer interns at City Hall in various departments including Information Technologies, Leisure Services, Neighborhood Services, Municipal Court and the City Council offices.

Councilman Steve Wolfson will recognize the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Bait Car Program. In 2006, Las Vegas was ranked #1 in the nation for stolen vehicles. Metro Police took a proactive approach to combat the problem, using “bait” cars to help catch thieves. These cars include sophisticated tracking mechanisms and are placed in high auto theft areas. As a result of the work of the Auto Theft Section detectives, auto thefts were down 15.7 percent in 2007, and are down 32 percent so far in 2008. In addition, Las Vegas relinquished the #1 spot in the nation for auto theft.

Councilman Wolfson will also recognize the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Department for its “Heat Kills” campaign. The campaign aims to raise public awareness about the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles. The campaign has been in existence since 2004.

The city will also be presented with the Leadership in Government Award from the Nevada Human Rights Campaign. The city is receiving the award because of its contributions to the continuing fight for equality through the implementation of its domestic partner program in 2006.

Finally, the city will recognize the July Employee of the Month Jeff Dix.  Dix, who is an administrative projects specialist with the Field Operations Department, has been with the city since April 1997.
