Everyone will enjoy the magic of marionettes as they come to life under the hand of master puppeteer Joseph Cashore on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 2:30 p.m. at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St. Cashore and his troupe will perform “Simple Gifts,” a series of touching portrayals and poignant scenes from everyday life, set to classical music. Through Cashore’s art, the puppets are able to sensitively and vividly portray what it is to be human. The performance is presented by the city of Las Vegas and Target.
General admission tickets for the performance are priced at $3 each or $10 for a family four-pack. Large group discounts are available. Purchase tickets online at www.artslasvegas.org, by telephone at 229-3515, or at the door.
The quality of movement of the marionettes is stunning. The internationally acclaimed performances have entertained audiences in Europe, the Far East and North America since 1990, including a stop at the Kennedy Center. Cashore has received numerous awards for his artistry, including a 1995 Citation of Excellence from Union Internationale de la Marionette USA (UNIMA), the highest honor an American puppeteer can receive. UNIMA states that Citations are "awarded to shows that touch their audiences deeply; that totally engage, enchant and enthrall."
Cashore worked for 19 years to create control mechanisms that would enable the fluid motion that helps marionettes come to life. During the late 1980s, Cashore had a breakthrough. He had always admired Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “The Lark Ascending” and decided to make a puppet that would convincingly “play” the violin solo note for note. “It seemed almost impossible to get the quality of movement that I wanted,” Cashore explains. “But once I began to solve the technical problems and gain subtle control of the marionette body, I saw that there was the possibility for greater depth of expression with the marionettes.” That puppet, Maestro Janos Zelinka, was the turning point in Cashore’s career and became the impetus for his present productions.
