City Of Las Vegas Cultural Arts & Community Events Oct. 5-11
Enjoy Willson & McKee Free Outdoor Concert In Centennial Plaza Oct. 7

 

Everyone is invited to enjoy the free outdoor concert by Kim McKee and Ken Willson on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Centennial Plaza downtown at 401 S. Fourth St. A Colorado native, McKee has a passion for traditional folk music and instruments. She has won numerous awards, including the 2002 National Mountain Dulcimer  Championship, three Colorado State Dulcimer Championships, as well as songwriting awards at the Milwaukee Irish Festival. Willson grew up in rural Minnesota and North Dakota, where he taught himself several instruments and musical styles, performing with many types of bands. Now this duo of talented musicians perform original and traditional Irish and Scottish acoustic music with voice and hammer dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, Celtic harp, accordion, Irish bouzouki, bodhran and guitars. The concert is open to the public, presented by the city of Las Vegas as part of the Downtown Cultural Series.  Call 229-3515 for more information.

Architecture Lecture – Alan Hess

Author Alan Hess will discuss mid-century modern architecture and the work of La Concha Motel designer Paul Revere Williams. Hess is the author of “Viva Las Vegas: After Hours Architecture,” “Googie: Fifties Coffee Shop Architecture,” and many more books and articles. A practicing architect, he is well known as an architecture critic and historian. Hess writes a weekly architecture column for the San Jose Mercury News. The lecture is sponsored by the Neon Museum and Assemblage Studio. The lecture is free to the public.

Thrilling and utterly beguiling, this staged version of Roald Dahl’s modern children’s classic retains all the warmth and sly humor of the book.  It’s a fun fantasy, just in time for Halloween, wrapped up in a frivolous treat of puppetry, intriguing illusions and surprises.  Ages 7 through adult will be riveted by this riotous romp, where the witches of nightmares are reduced to the ridiculous. Scottish Country Dancing (all ages)

Scottish Country Dancing is the beautiful "ballroom" dance of Scotland, a social dance form with roots stretching back for centuries. Enjoy both traditional and modern dances. Dancers should wear comfortable clothes and soft shoes such as gillies, ballet slippers or jazz shoes. Ladies will find that skirts help them to enjoy the natural flow of the dance.  Kilts are not required, but are heartily encouraged.

Free 18th Annual Disability Awareness Day (all ages)

Enjoy a day of fun aimed at raising awareness of available services for the disabled. The free event will include more than 60 organizations that will highlight information and services on the Americans with Disabilities Act, independent living, recreation, employment, housing, legal service transportation and other services that enhance and promote the equality, self-determination, independence, productivity, integration and inclusion of people with disabilities. Participants can enjoy free entertainment and refreshments (while supplies last). A free employment seminar will be available for Social Security beneficiaries ages 14 to 64 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Call 889-4216 to attend. The event is sponsored by the Southern Nevada Center for Independent Living, the city of Las Vegas, the Nevada Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation, the Social Security Administration and Well Care Pharmacy, LLC. Dance to the live music of an acoustic band playing joyful fiddle tunes, driving reels, and a waltz or two. These lively community dances recapture aspects of New England and frontier barn dances, with more modern twists. All dances are taught and called, newcomers and families are welcomed. No need to bring a partner. Wear comfortable flat-soled shoes and casual clothing.
