Enjoy some exercise and a few laughs at the annual Mutts ‘n’ Masters 5K Run and 1-mile Fun Walk on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center at 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive.
The events include a competitive 5K run and a one-mile run/walk for all ages and abilities, with or without a dog. All two-legged participants will receive a T-shirt and a goody bag. All four-legged finishers will receive a bandana. Residents who don’t take part in the walk can still take part in the fun by watching free dog agility and obedience demonstrations, as well as a doggie costume contest.
The “Masters and Muttsters” of the ceremonies will be Ward 2 Councilman Steve Wolfson and his dogs, Kobe, Magic and Sunday.
“Every year at this event we have so much doggone fun and burn off a few calories at the same time,” Councilman Wolfson said. “Having fun and being active are so important for good health.”
For those who pre-register for the 5K run by Oct. 15, the entry fee is only $25. The pre-registration fee for the one-mile run/walk is $20. Registration on the day of the event will be $30 for the 5K and $25 for the one-mile run/walk. Online pre-registration is encouraged at www.active.com through Oct. 15. Pre-registration forms also may be picked up/dropped off at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center through Oct. 15. Registrants 50 years and older will receive a 10-percent discount when registering in person with proper identification.
On-site registration begins at 8 a.m. at the center. The walk and run begin at 9 a.m., beginning and ending at the center.
Awards will be given to the top male and female finishers, the top male and female finishers overall with their dogs, and the top male and female runners in each of nine age groups, in the 5K run. The one-mile fun walk is non-competitive.
A doggie costume contest will take place at 10:30 a.m. The cutest, scariest and most creative costume will take home a ribbon and bragging rights.
The Las Vegas Dogs in Competitive Events Club will offer dog agility demonstrations at 9:30 a.m. Vegas Valley Dog Obedience will provide dog obedience demonstrations at 10 a.m.
There is a limit of one dog per person; each animal must remain on a leash. All dogs should wear a current rabies tag and be up-to-date on all vaccinations. Please do not bring dogs "in-heat" or that may be a threat to others. Event officials reserve the right to refuse aggressive animals. Participants are asked to clean up after their pets.
A parent or guardian must sign the liability waiver for children under 18 years of age to participate. Mutts ‘n’ Masters is sponsored by the city of Las Vegas.
