U.S. Department Of Education Official To Visit Las Vegas Safekey Celebrations To Mark National Lights On Afterschool Initiative
Events Intended To Shine Spotlight On Benefits Of Afterschool Programs

The U.S. Department of Education deputy assistant secretary, John McGrath, will see firsthand what the city of Las Vegas Safekey program is doing to mark the national Lights On Afterschool initiative on Thursday, Oct. 22.  He will visit two Safekey sites: Kermit R. Booker Sr. Elementary School at 2277 Martin Luther King Drive at 3:30 p.m. and Eileen Conners Elementary School at 3810 Shadow Peak Drive at 4:30 p.m.

This is the 10th annual Lights On Afterschool initiative promoted by the Afterschool Alliance. More than 7,500 events are planned nationwide to shine a spotlight on the benefits of afterschool programs.

Today in Nevada and across the United States, 14.3 million children go home alone after school. In Las Vegas, the city’s Safekey program serves more than 8,000 youth giving them a safe place to go after the school day ends. Quality afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.

Parents and students interested in the city’s Safekey program are invited to join the Lights On Afterschool celebrations including:
