Space Heater Starts Fire In Eastside Townhome

Description of damage:  Two rooms in rear of house gutted, smoke damage throughout rest of unit, firewall stopped fire from entering adjoining townhome, it had a smoke odor.

General information about the incident:   All seven family members were asleep in the master bedroom that contained a sofa with an electric space heater next to it. Adults were awaken by the children screaming the sofa was on fire. They all evacuated the home safely and alerted neighbors to evacuate also. Heavy fire and smoke was showing from the bedroom when firefighters arrived. The fire was quickly extinguished. There were no injuries. The father stated that there was a space heater next to the sofa where he saw the fire. The family received assistance from the American Red Cross and the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Foundation. The family is staying with family members who live down the street until their insurance company can make arrangements for temporary housing. The home where they are staying tonight did not have smoke alarms in it; Las Vegas Fire & Rescue provided the home with two free smoke alarms before they left the family. There were no reported injuries.
