A flurry of construction activity will be underway on Main Street, south of Bridger Avenue, as three downtown redevelopment projects put work into high gear during January. Traffic lane restrictions can be expected on Main, between Lewis and Gass avenues, and at the Main and Bonneville Avenue intersection. On-street parking will also be temporarily disrupted on Main, First Street, Lewis and Clark avenues.
“If you want to see, first hand, the improvements we have been talking about these many months, Main Street is the place to be,” said Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese, who represents this area of Ward 3. “To my recollection, this is the first time we will have three contractors working on three separate but complementary projects, along the same four blocks of roadway at the same time. These are exciting times for downtown Las Vegas.”
As extensive traffic delays and disruptions on Main Street can be expected during January, alternate routes for through travel are suggested. Access to area businesses will be maintained during the construction. The three projects include:
Symphony Park Power Infrastructure Improvements
Work to install and upgrade the power infrastructure for the city of Las Vegas Symphony Park development has started and is causing traffic lane restrictions on Main. In early January, Main will narrow to one travel lane in each direction between Clark and Gass avenues for the improvements. The Main and Bonneville intersection will narrow to one lane in each direction during the overnight hours, and there may be occasions when flag personnel direct traffic via one shared lane during the overnight hours.
Work for this $1.5 million project is also underway on Gass and Coolidge avenues, between Main and First; and at some of the adjacent side-street approaches to Main. The contractor is Capriati Construction and the city of Las Vegas Department of Public Works is managing the project.
This infrastructure project is slated for completion in March. Symphony Park infrastructure bonds are funding the improvements.
500 S. Main Street Demolition
Starting Monday, Jan. 11, and continuing through the next three to five weeks, traffic lane restrictions will be in effect to southbound travel on Main, between Lewis and Bonneville avenues. These traffic disruptions are necessary as crews demolish buildings on the west side of Main and south of Clark, to make way for the new 500 S. Main Street Parking Garage. Work on this $50,000 project is funded by city of Las Vegas municipal parking bonds. The demolition contractor is Baldwin Development LLC and the city’s Department of Public Works is managing the project.
Clearing The Way For New City Hall
Utility relocation work to make way for construction of the new Las Vegas City Hall, by Forest City Enterprises, is scheduled to start in January. Traffic lane restrictions will be in effect on Main, between Lewis and Clark; and on Clark and Garces, between Main and First streets. The contractor is Whiting-Turner.
