Two trails under construction in Ward 2 have received official names. The Angel Park Trailhead, located on Durango Drive between Summerlin Parkway and Westcliff Drive, is set for completion by the end of March 2010. The Hualapai Canyon Trail, located on Hualapai Way between Town Center Drive and Alta Drive, should be completed by the end of June 2010. The new names were approved by the Las Vegas City Council last month, after considering names suggested by the public.
"We asked the public to contribute suggestions for trail names using the city's Web site, and we received many good ideas, including the names selected,” said Las Vegas Councilman Steve Wolfson, who represents this area of Ward 2. “It's always beneficial when residents are able to participate in the community, and taking suggestions online made it simple and easy for everyone who contributed. I look forward to seeing them all at the trail openings."
The Angel Park Trailhead, under construction since January 2009, is part of a three-phase trail project that will create approximately three new miles of recreational trail system. One portion of the trail begins at the city of Las Vegas Bruce Trent Park on Vegas Drive. The trail will continue to the south adjacent to Durango Drive to tie into the trailhead phase of the project that is being constructed on the west side of Durango at Westcliff Drive. The trail will continue from the trailhead to the south and will wrap around the city’s Angel Park and then head westerly to cross Rampart Boulevard and continue along the south side of the Angel Park Golf Course, eventually terminating at Alta Drive. The trail will accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists and other modes of non-motorized travel. The landscaped trail will include benches, trash cans, dog waste stations, fencing and trail lighting. A pedestrian bridge will be installed across the wash area on the golf course. As part of the Angel Park Trailhead, shade structures and playground equipment will be installed.
The new, multi-use Hualapai Canyon Trail, under construction since August 2009, starts at Hualapai Way, between Town Center Drive and Alta Drive, and extends easterly for approximately one-half mile adjacent to the Tournament Players Club at The Canyons. Both sides of the 10-foot-wide trail will be landscaped. Other amenities will include rest areas, benches, trash receptacles, pet waste stations and trail lighting.
Funding for the $4 million Angel Park Trail and the $3 million Hualapai Canyon Trail is provided by the Bureau of Land Management through the sale of public lands as authorized by the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act. Diamond Construction is the Angel Park Trail contractor, while Wiser Construction is the contractor for Hualapai Canyon Trail. The city of Las Vegas Public Works Department is managing both projects. The city’s Planning and Development Department developed the trail concepts and secured federal funds for the construction.
