Former NBA veteran player Jerome "Junkyard Dog" Williams and Las Vegas Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow will host more than 60 youth ages 10-16 in a basketball boot camp at Doolittle Community Center July 12-14. The focus will be on basketball skills and fundamentals, with additional instruction by college and area high school coaches on fitness, health and life skills.
Born in Washington, D.C., Williams attended Georgetown University. He played for the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks during his nine years of professional basketball. He retired from the NBA in 2005, and spent a week in South Africa that year participating in the Basketball Without Borders program. He became a youth ambassador for the program and an NBA FIT Team member, a role model to promote fitness and health. Williams has continued to be involved in community efforts to keep youth in school and to open future opportunities for them through basketball.
"I am thrilled to have someone of Jerome Williams' caliber joining with me to host this exciting basketball boot camp," Councilman Barlow said. "We will not only teach youth the fundamentals of the game, but also skills necessary to be successful in life."
