The city of Las Vegas will receive a Project of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association for the new Stupak Community Center at the Wednesday, Aug. 4, City Council meeting, which will take place following the 8:30 a.m. Redevelopment Agency meeting in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave.
The new Stupak Community Center, located at 251 W. Boston Ave., is a state-of-the-art facility that opened in January 2010. It is in Ward 3, which is represented by Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese. The center offers a gymnasium, walking track, teen room, fitness room, computer lab and library. The center also offers activities for youth, adults and seniors.
In addition, Councilman Steven D. Ross and Councilman Steve Wolfson will recognize several high school athletes for their accomplishments. Councilman Ross will recognize Centennial High School’s state champion lacrosse teams, while Councilman Wolfson will recognize the outstanding sportsmanship of a Faith Lutheran Middle School student, who knew doing the right thing would result in his disqualification at a track meet.
Councilman Ross will also recognize the August Citizen of the Month.
Finally, Councilman Stavros S. Anthony will also recognize the Tour of Duty Charity Run. The event is a 31-day run across the United States that raises money for several charities including the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, the Fallen Firefighters Memorial Fund and the Wounded Warriors Fund.
