Damage estimate: $800,000         Description of damage:  Heavy damage to two different attic areas, damage on second floor from debris falling through the ceiling from the attic, damage to first floor moderate, extensive damage to back patio.

Cause of incident:  A man and his son were home when a trash container on the back patio caught fire. They put the fire out using a garden hose. They told fire investigators they soaked the waste container for several minutes. The trash container was against a column that supported a balcony over the back patio and the balcony also served as a patio cover. The column was hollow made of wood and stucco. Fire investigators believe heat from the trash container burning extended through the stucco to the wood inside the column which acted as a chimney.  The two occupants left home about an hour later to attend ball practice unaware that a fire was burning inside the column, which could not be seen from the outside.  Fire extended up the column to inside the walls of the house to the attic area where it was able to spread across the entire house.

American Red Cross: No  (4 people displaced.)    Pets:  Yes          Status of pets: Several pets were in the house at the time of the fire, all were saved and are okay.

General information about the incident:  No one was home when the fire started. Animals in the house were saved, many neighbors came out and helped the man and his son with support and help keep the animals safe. The fire was ruled accidental.
