Adult Las Vegas residents are invited to a free program held to celebrate National Healthcare Decision Day Thursday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, located at 250 N. Eastern Ave.
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman will welcome participants for a town hall discussion scheduled from 9 to 10:30 a.m. with distinguished panelists about advance directives and the Living Will Lock Box program. The remaining time will be available to visit exhibit booths, meet with pro bono attorneys to complete advance directives and talk to other professionals. The event is sponsored by the city of Las Vegas, Nathan Adelson Hospice, the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program, State Bar of Nevada and other agencies.
This national celebration began in 2009 to remind everyone, regardless of age or current health, of the importance of making his/her healthcare decisions known. An advance directive is a written statement of a person's wishes regarding medical treatment, often including a living will. The directive is made to ensure those wishes are carried out should the person be unable to communicate them to a doctor. The Living Will Lockbox is a secure, web-based registry to which individuals can submit a living will or other advance directive documents to be electronically stored with password-restricted access. Attorneys from the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program and the State Bar of Nevada will be available to assist attendees with completing their advance directives and signing on to the Living Will Lock Box. A number of agencies will provide valuable information about this and other related topics. Light refreshments will be available. For more information, call (702) 229-1515.
