A northwest Las Vegas home sustained heavy damage after a fire late Sunday evening. All family members were able to escape without injury. The American Red Cross is assisting two adults and two children that live in the house.
Fire dispatchers received several calls at 10:45 p.m. Sunday. that the garage to a house at 5509 Mare Way (Cheyenne/Jones) was on fire. When firefighters arrived in front of the one-story wood frame/stucco house, heavy flames were coming from the garage. Smoke was also showing from around the roof of the house indicating the fire had already advanced into the attic. A few minutes later fire broke through the roof of the house. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.
The fire completely gutted the garage, and attic area of the house. The rest of the house had moderate to heavy damage in certain areas because the ceiling caved in. Damage was estimated at $100,000.
The cause of the fire appears to be accidental starting around the washer and dryer which is also in the garage. The two children and their mother were home when the fire started. She smelled smoke and went around the house looking for the source. When she checked the garage, she found fire all around the washer and dryer area. The three family members along with their three pet dogs escaped without injury.
The American Red Cross is assisting the four members of the family.
