Registration Open For Las Vegas Municipal Court Domestic Violence Conference
Program Designed To Increase Understanding And Competence In Working With Diverse Populations

Las Vegas Municipal Court will host a two-day conference, “Taboo Topics in Domestic Violence,” Oct. 3-4, at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, located at 250 N. Eastern Ave. Conference topics will include cultural diversity, ethics, gender and sexual orientation, immigration laws, the female domestic violence perpetrator, confidentiality and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) privacy and security rules.

“We began doing annual training for Municipal Court employees years ago,” said Chief Judge Cynthia Leung. “But it benefits the entire community when all involved peace officers, doctors, counselors, attorney and judges increase their understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence across many cultures. That’s why we invite the community to attend and learn with us, and why we request continuing education credits for professionals.”

On-site registration will open at 8:30 a.m. each morning. Workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., with a break for participants to obtain lunch on their own.

The conference is appropriate for attorneys, children’s service workers, correctional facility staff, marriage and family counselors, drug and alcohol counselors, educators, judges, law enforcement officers, pastoral counselors, social workers, psychologists/psychiatrists, hospital/clinical staff and treatment facilitators for domestic violence batterers.

Continuing education credits may be available from several state boards upon completion of the seminar. See the registration form for details.

Early-bird registration costs $150; registration Sept. 15-Oct. 4 costs $175. Early-bird registrations must be received by Sept. 14. Registration is available by mail, fax and online. Go online to www.lasvegasnevada.gov/municipalcourt for a seminar brochure and registration form.
