Ward 6 Councilman Steven D. Ross was named the Public Official of the Year by the Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities this past weekend during the league’s annual conference. Ross, who serves as the league’s president, was recognized for the service he has provided in the community and to the league.
Since being elected to the City Council in 2005, Councilman Ross has served on a number of committees and boards that benefit the valley as a whole, including the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Regional Flood Control District, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, the Clark County Shooting Park Advisory Committee and others.
As the councilman for Ward 6, Councilman Ross has been committed to protecting the existing rural areas of the northwest, while at the same time making his ward an attractive place for new families. Councilman Ross’ priorities are public safety, smart growth and providing recreational opportunities. He believes it is important to make sure that public services and infrastructure such as fire stations, police, roads and flood control channels keep pace with a developing community.
As president of the Nevada league, Councilman Ross has worked hard to keep members up to date on current topics at the local, state and national level that affect the valley, as well as on efforts by the National League of Cities as well as the U.S. Conference of Mayors. In addition, partnerships with the Governor’s Office, state officials, local and federal legislative representatives, and other local government organizations have been enhanced under Councilman Ross’ leadership.
Councilman Ross also worked with first vice president and Henderson Councilwoman Debra March to plan the 2012 Conference in Elko. They sought input and suggestions from other board members during a league strategic planning session, which included reviewing their executive board positions and responsibilities, and analyzing the budget process.
