Las Vegas firefighters responded to a vacant duplex fire located at 618 W. Washington Ave. at 1:20 Saturday morning. On arrival, heavy firefighters found heavy fire in the attic of the one-story building. The fire was intense enough that it weakened the roof and firefighters were evacuated because a large air conditioner sat on the roof above where the fire was. Shortly later the roof caved in.
It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. The fire was fought from the outside because of the potential for the building to collapse.
The fire completely gutted the attic and destroyed the roof over the two apartments. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
The cause of the fire is undetermined. The building has been vacant for some time and was unsecured. People told investigators that homeless people were staying inside the building for some time. No one was present when firefighters arrived.
The incident remains under investigation.
