Ward 5 Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow invites middle and high school youth to bring a parent or guardian and join him for a free fishing derby at the Lorenzi Park lake Saturday, Nov. 9. Participants will check in between 8 and 9 a.m. at a covered pavilion south of the lake, and enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast. Stations for teaching fishing techniques, applicable laws, fish cleaning, obtaining free bait and checking out poles will be available starting at 8 a.m. The fishing derby will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by an awards ceremony and brown bag lunch provided by Councilman Barlow. Call (702) 229-5443 to register in advance by noon Wednesday, Nov. 6.
“I’m looking forward to seeing these young people spend quality time with mentors, learning the sport and skill of fishing, and enjoying this great park,” said Councilman Barlow. “I anticipate seeing a happy glow in their faces as our youth have a great day learning new skills.”
Completion of advance registration is required before youth may participate. Community organizations who wish to register large groups, as well as individuals, should call (702) 229-5443 for information and preregistration. Interested individuals who wish to serve as mentors also should call (702) 229-5443 for information on fishing training to be scheduled in advance of the derby.
Participants are encouraged to bring fishing poles, if possible. The Nevada Department of Wildlife will have 250 fishing poles to check out and lend at the park to those who have preregistered, but the need for poles is expected to exceed the supply. Fishing licenses will not be required for the event; the city of Las Vegas will have a group fishing license for the day. There will be a three-fish limit (to keep) per person. Those who want to keep what they catch should be sure to bring a cooler with ice in order to transport fish safely home.
The city of Las Vegas, the Nevada Department of Wildlife, KCEP Power 88 Radio and other community organizations are partnering to present this event. See the flier.
