Fire Damages West Sahara Avenue Business
Fire Damages West Sahara Avenue Business

A West Sahara Avenue business was damaged, but sustained extensive smoke damage from a minor fire that occurred sometime early Sunday morning.  Fire investigators determined the fire was accidental; it appears it was electrical in nature.  They could not rule out the possibility that Christmas lights might have started the fire.

The owner of the business came to open the Ritmo Zum Ballroom at 4225 W. Sahara Ave. in the Sahara West Village Shopping Complex late Sunday morning.  When the owner opened the door, he found the one story, concrete block business full of smoke.  He went to a neighboring business and called 9-1-1.

Las Vegas fire dispatchers received the call at 11:31 a.m.  Firefighters from Las Vegas and Clark County arrived a few minutes later.  They found the business with slight smoke inside and found where a fire had previously burned itself out in the rear of the business.  The business was closed at the time of the fire.

The fire burned a small area in the rear, but thick black smoke put a coating of black soot over everything throughout the business.  The thick black smoke probably smothered the flames.  There was no fire or smoke alarms in the business.  Fire damage was estimated at $5,000.

The owner told fire investigators that he left the business about 10 p.m. Saturday.  He spent the evening putting Christmas decorations up, including Christmas lights that were in the area of where the fire occurred.  He said everything was the same in the rear of the business except for the addition of the lights.  They were plugged into a large power strip.  That end of the power strip and the Christmas lights were consumed by the fire.  Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental, electrical in origin, Christmas lights could not be ruled out as the cause.

When you go to sleep at night or leave your home or business, you should unplug all decorations.

None of the other eight businesses in the shopping complex were damaged by the fire.  There were no reported injuries.
