The Las Vegas City Council will recognize the local winners of the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Soccer Showcase at the Wednesday, March 5, City Council meeting that will begin at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 495 S. Main St.
The Mayor’s Cup was held Feb. 15-17 and is the largest international youth soccer tournament in the country, and Mayor Pro Tem Stavros S. Anthony will recognize the winning local teams. More than 8,000 soccer players, ages 14 to 19, from 13 foreign countries and 29 U.S. states, played on soccer fields around the valley. The event is co-hosted by the city of Las Vegas and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club, and brings more than $18 million into the local economy, according to Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club President Roger Tabor.
In addition, Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman will recognize the March Citizen of the Month Gerardo Gamboa. Gamboa is a local taxi driver who returned $300,000 in cash accidentally left in his cab.
The mayor will also recognize a team of city employees who helped to facilitate the Life is Beautiful music, art and food festival last fall.
Councilmen Steven D. Ross and Bob Beers will celebrate the winners of the local science bowl competition from Meadows and Centennial high schools and the Northwest Career and Technical Academy.
Finally, Councilman Ross will also recognize the Centennial High School bowling team which recently won the state bowling championship.
