Fire Damages Downtown Studio Apartment
One Child Taken To The Hospital For Smoke Inhalation

A toddler was taken to the hospital to be checked out for smoke inhalation after a fire started in a small downtown studio apartment.  The fire was confined to one unit.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire dispatchers received several calls at 4:05 p.m. Monday that smoke was coming from an upstairs apartment at the Downtowner Motel/Apartments at 129 N. Eighth Street (at Ogden Avenue.)  When firefighters arrived smoke was showing from a room on the second floor of a two-story motel.  Firefighters went into the unit and found a fire on the stove of a small kitchenette.  They had the fire out in a minute.  The fire was confined to the stove area, but the rest of the room had moderate smoke damage.  Damage was estimated at $5,000.  No other units were damaged by the fire.

A small child was in the room at the time of the fire.  The child was taken to the hospital to be checked out for smoke inhalation.  There were no reported injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
