City Of Las Vegas to Host Job Fair For Veterans May 22
Veterans Encouraged To Attend For Job Opportunities

The city of Las Vegas is hosting a job fair targeting veterans. The job fair will take place from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the East Las Vegas Community Center at 250 N. Eastern Ave. More than 45 employers are expected, each with at least two available positions.

The U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) and its 19 member agencies launched Opening Doors, the nation’s first-ever comprehensive strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness, on June 22, 2010. One of the goals identified by the council and agencies is preventing and ending homelessness among veterans by 2015. This initiative was later adopted by the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition Committee on Homelessness.

Veterans are encouraged to bring their resume to the job fair.

“These men and women have selflessly served our country and unfortunately some return to our communities with specific needs that not all employers are equipped to meet.  In too many of these cases a cycle of homelessness begins,” said Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman. “Through this job fair we hope to not only give our veterans new opportunities but also to bring employers together to discuss common challenges and how they can best address them.”

From 10-11:30 a.m., employers will be participating in a symposium that will include presentations from Dylan Gray, Veterans Outreach Coordinator for the State of Nevada, and Dr. Carolyn Hughes from the Southern Nevada Healthcare System to inform employers of the benefits of hiring veterans. Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman will provide a welcome at 10 a.m. Community service providers will also be present to discuss the support services available to veterans. Employers interested in participating can email their information to charry@lasvegasnevada.gov
