The Las Vegas City Council will receive a national sustainability award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors at the Wednesday, Aug. 20, City Council meeting that will begin following the 8:30 a.m. Redevelopment Agency meeting in City Hall council chambers, located at 495 S. Main St.
As part of City Council agenda item #56, U.S. Conference of Mayors CEO and Executive Director Tom Cochran will be at the meeting, as will representatives of Wal-Mart who will present a $25,000 check to Green Chips, a local non-profit organization dedicated to building community through collaborative partnerships for a more sustainable future. Green Chips will be working with Opportunity village on solar-powered projects.
Also, the City Council will recognize the Las Vegas Neon under 17 boys soccer team. After four days of play in July in South Carolina, the Neon emerged as national champions at the 2014 United States Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup finals.
The Neon was one of 40 participating teams that came from all over the country to compete for a national title.
Mayor Pro Tem Stavros S. Anthony is scheduled to honor the team members, coaches and parents during the ceremonial portion of the agenda.
In addition, the City Council will recognize the Employee of the Month for helping to return some lost money to a resident.
