Automatic Fire Sprinkler Prevents Spread Of Fire In Apartment Building

Las Vegas fire investigators are crediting automatic fire sprinklers with preventing a storage room fire from spreading to the rest of the apartment. The cause of the fire is undetermined. There were no reported injuries.

Fire dispatchers received numerous calls at 5:01 a.m. Thursday after people heard fire alarms activated at the Talavera Apartments, located at 2251 South Fort Apache Road (W. Sahara/Ft. Apache). When firefighters arrived, they found the balcony of a second story apartment on fire. Firefighters used a fire hose to douse the flames, which were coming from a storage closet accessible from the balcony. Automatic fire sprinklers held the flames outside until firefighters could extinguish them and kept the fire from spreading into the apartment. Fire sprinklers located above windows to the balcony activated when the windows broke out due to the fire.

Damage was confined to the storage room and balcony. Damage was estimated at $10,000. Fire investigators said there were only a few items in the storage closet.
