Free Admission for Children at Second Saturday on August 13

Discover the art, history and culture of the Cultural Corridor during Second Saturday on August 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The neighborhood along Las Vegas Boulevard North, from McWilliams Avenue to Washington Avenue, is home to the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum, Las Vegas Natural History Museum, Reed Whipple Cultural Center, Old Mormon Fort, Neon Museum Boneyard, Las Vegas Library and Cashman Center.

Special programs and activities are planned throughout the day. Residents should visit the welcome tent outside the library for the latest information. Children are admitted free to all museums and the boneyard when accompanied by a paying adult. Free trolley service provides transportation from site to site.

Visitors will learn about earthquakes, volcanoes, lava flows and the effects of meteors on the Earth’s surface in the Natural History Museum’s exhibit, “Shake, Rattle and Flow.” They can also stop in the library for fun, games, a movie marathon, treasure hunt, Wild West shows by Bonnie Springs and food. Visitors are also invited to compete for a prize in the Harry Potter Triwizard Challenge and see the latest addition to the Neon Museum Boneyard’s collection, the legendary Horseshoes from Binion’s Casino. Free tickets (while they last) to the Las Vegas 51s game on August 13 are available at the welcome tent and museums.

The trolley also travels downtown to the POST Modern, the former historic post office at 300 East Stewart Avenue. The building is open for free tours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the second floor exhibit, VIP Vegas (Vegas Viewed in Postcards), is a fascinating retrospective of Las Vegas as seen through vintage postcards. Images of the building’s history are displayed in the exhibit, POST View.

Second Saturday in the Cultural Corridor is presented monthly by the Cultural Affairs Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services and the Cultural Corridor Coalition. Residents can call 229-5431 for more information.
