City Applauds Federal Legislation That Will Free Up Money For City Parks And Recreation Projects

The city of Las Vegas applauds legislation that was introduced by Nevada’s two senators that will free up millions for public parks and recreation projects. The White Pine County Bill that was introduced by Nevada’s two senators Tuesday evening makes significant changes to the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act of 1988, which will favorably impact city valley residents.

Ward 4 Las Vegas Councilman Larry Brown, who is heavily involved in BLM issues, said, "This new bill helps to expedite the development of recreational projects in Southern Nevada related to our quality of life and it is a major step toward the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act having major impacts in this valley. It will fund new projects in the city of Las Vegas much faster than the current system."

The new bill contains a provision in which the Bureau of Land Management can transfer 100 percent of the funds for a recreation project to the city of Las Vegas. Currently, the city must first expend the funds and then request reimbursement from the BLM. The legislation also creates new initiatives for affordable and workforce housing. It also contains an expansion of the turf-replacement program in Clark County, designed to dramatically conserve water in southern Nevada.
