Required Candidate Filings

Nevada law requires a candidate for public office to file the following documents.

Statement of Financial Disclosure

This statement is filed with the Secretary of State 10 days after the last day to file a declaration of candidacy (NRS 281.561). Forms will be provided in the candidate filing packet and the Secretary of State may be contacted directly for further details.

Candidates must complete and file this form with the Nevada Secretary of State on or before Tuesday, February 17, 2009 (The filing date by law is Monday, February 16, 2009, but as this day falls on a holiday NRS 293.1275 moves the filing date to the next business day)..

If certified mail is used, the date of the postmark shall be deemed the date of filing; if mailed, this filing must be received in the Secretary of State’s office on or before February 17, 2009.

We suggest you make two copies of your completed original form. Mail your original form to the Secretary of State by certified mail, return receipt requested, to provide you with mailing documentation for your records.  Retain a copy for your file.

Remember: A candidate for public office or public officer who fails to file a Financial Disclosure Statement in a timely manner pursuant to NRS 281.561 is subject to a civil penalty and payment of court costs and attorney’s fees. Knowingly filing a Financial Disclosure Statement containing false or misleading information is a gross misdemeanor (NRS 197.130).

Please note: Judicial candidates do not fall under the requirements of NRS 281; however, they are required to file a Statement of Financial Disclosure with the Nevada Supreme Court under the Judicial Canons.  The Nevada Supreme Court website may be accessed by using the link to the right or you can call the Administrative Office of the Court at (775) 684-1700.

Contributions & Expenses / In Kind Reports 2009
In accordance with the Nevada Campaign Practices Act, every candidate for municipal office must file the required Contributions and Expenses Reports even though they withdraw their candidacy, have no opposition, lose in the Primary Election, their name does not appear on either the Primary or General Election ballot, they are elected to office, or they do not file a declaration of candidacy but are a candidate as defined in NRS 294A.005 because they have received campaign contributions in excess of $100. Pursuant to NRS 294A.362, in kind contributions must be reported separately.

Filing Dates per NRS 294A.360:

Report #1 — Due March 31, 2009
Period: Jan. 1, 2009 — Mar. 26, 2009

Report #2 — Due May 26, 2009
Period: March 27, 2009 — May 21, 2009

Report #3 Due — July 15, 2009
Period: May 22, 2009 — June 30, 2009
