Find Programs > Social Play And Respite for Kids (SPARK)
SPARK is a free respite program for children 3-8 years old who have special needs. The program provides a fun, exciting and safe environment for children to participate in on-site recreational activities including arts and crafts, games, and outdoor play. SPARK offers its participants an opportunity to engage in social play with peers where the objective is to just have fun!
SPARK is modeled after a successful program that has been established in Reno, and is now in its 10th year of operation. One of the unique aspects of this program is that it utilizes local high school students as program staff. SPARK works with Las Vegas area high schools to provide their students an opportunity to be trained by and then work alongside professional staff, obtain valuable volunteer hours and gain practical experience with children who have special needs. This is an excellent opportunity for those who wish to pursue careers in education, recreation or other related fields.
The program looks for responsible students, between the ages of 16 and 18, who are willing to offer their time (min. four hours a week for at least one semester) working with children with special needs in a recreation setting. Those students are trained in program planning, disability awareness and behavior management. Qualified professionals will be on-site to supervise and assist students and children participants during program sessions. Student assistants will eventually be responsible for planning and implementing various activities such as arts and crafts, sports activities, and fun educational programs during program sessions.
SPARK's program runs on Saturdays, October through May. The Summer SPARK program begins in May and runs through August. For more information, contact (702) 229-1710.
