City Council Proclaims May As Historic Preservation Month By Recognizing Local Organizations
May To Also Be Recognized As Asian/Pacific Islander Month

During the ceremonial portion of tomorrow’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, which will take place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave., Mayor Oscar B. Goodman will recognize May as Historic Preservation Month. Several groups and individuals will be recognized for their role in historic preservation efforts and will be presented with proclamations in celebration of this year’s theme, “This Place Matters.” Those being recognized include Preserve Nevada, the Preservation Association of Clark County, Atomic Age Alliance, the city of Las Vegas’ Office of Architectural Services, Jan Paul Koch and Kristen Petersen.

Also at tomorrow’s meeting, the city will proclaim May as Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Proclamations will be presented to representatives from several local groups including the Asian Chamber of Commerce, the Asian Real Estate Association of America and the Japan America Society of Nevada.

The City Council will also proclaim May 12 through 18 as National Salvation Army Week. The weeklong event celebrates the contributions of the nonprofit social service provider to the community. Major William Raihl and Charles Desiderio with the Salvation Army will be on hand to accept the proclamation.

A proclamation will also be presented to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to mark National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week. This national observance honors the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

May will also be recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese will present a proclamation to Dr. Stuart Ghertner, the director of the Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services. The month-long effort aims to remind the public about the goals and activities of the nation’s mental health programs and to raise awareness about mental health conditions.
