City Council To Recognize Larry Ruvo As The May Citizen Of The Month
Local Teacher Also To Be Recognized For Earning National Award

 

During the ceremonial portion of tomorrow’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, which will take place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave., Mayor Oscar B. Goodman will recognize Larry Ruvo as the May Citizen of the Month. Mayor Goodman chose Ruvo because of his numerous charitable and philanthropic contributions to the Las Vegas community. Additionally, Ruvo is the founder of Keep Memory Alive, an organization that is dedicated to the fight against memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease. The organization and the Lou Ruvo Brain Institute, which is being built on the city’s 61-acre Union Park project, will bring international attention to downtown Las Vegas.

Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian will recognize local teacher Phil Bombino for earning a national Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. Bombino is a Clark High School calculus teacher and is one of only 50 teachers nationwide to receive the award. Teachers with a minimum of five years of teaching experience in math, science or technology advanced placement courses are selected for their exemplary teaching and enthusiastic dedication to students and the advanced placement program.

Also at the meeting, Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow will recognize the winners of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Bolden Area Command art and safety contest. More than 1,300 students from four elementary schools participated in the contest, which was part of the Safe Village / Operation Lasting Peace initiative. The students were asked to submit pictures that presented what peace and safety means to them.

 The City Council will also recognize a number of local students at the meeting. First, students from Ruthe Deskin Elementary School will be recognized for earning the Great American Pride Award, which is given to students for studying and memorizing five patriotic items including the Preamble of the Constitution and the Gettysburg Address. Students of two middle schools will also be recognized for winning their division basketball championships. The Leavitt Middle School girls team and the Molasky Middle School boys team both won their respective division crowns.

The City Council will also recognize Missing Children’s Day with a proclamation. The national observance, which has been recognized on May 25 since 1983, aims to remind communities to make child safety a priority,

Also at the meeting, the City Council will recognize the May Employee of the Month, Victoria Franklin. Franklin, who is a recreation leader II with the Leisure Services Department, has been with the city since July 2005.
