General information about the incident: Fire dispatchers received multiple calls that thick black smoke was coming from a vacant bank building just after 1 p.m. On arrival, thick black smoke was coming out of the building so a second alarm was sounded. Approximately 89 children at the Tinker Town daycare next door were evacuated to another building at the beginning of the fire. No one was injured. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control and about one hour to put it out completely. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Firefighters responded to the same building at 8:12 a.m. this morning after an employee at the daycare center reported that six or seven juveniles were setting off fireworks in the parking lot of the bank and throwing them on to the daycare center playground. As firefighters and police descended on the bank, the kids ran through the daycare center as they left the area. Fire investigators did find spent fireworks in the parking lot of the vacant bank. Residents in the subdivision behind the bank also reported hearing the fireworks. Fire investigators will look into whether the two incidents are related.
