City Employees Volunteering To Paint Fire Hydrants As Part Of ‘Clean Ward 5’ Campaign

Ward 5 Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow and the city of Las Vegas Neighborhood Services Department have teamed up to give residents the opportunity help clean up their community. A Ward 5 neighborhood cleanup will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, beginning at Coleman Park, located at 1401 Daybreak Road, off of Carmen Boulevard, between Jones and Torrey Pines. The community gathering will include a jump house for children, along with staff from the city of Las Vegas and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on hand to answer questions. A neighborhood association meeting will follow from 11 a.m. to noon at the park.
Residents will have the opportunity to get rid of unwanted items, trash and debris through a city partnership with Republic Services of Southern Nevada. A group of city employees from the 2006 Leadership Academy, a comprehensive 11-week city course held over a five month period designed to train employees to become better leaders, is also volunteering its time and will be painting fire hydrants that have become faded. By volunteering to paint fire hydrants, the group’s participation will help save the city money to accomplish a task that has been otherwise suspended in light of recent budget cuts.
“Through the participation of city employees, we are able to use this as a cost-saving measure, but it also allows us to continue to provide the same level of service our community has come to expect,” Councilman Barlow said. “The Clean Ward 5 campaign is all about bringing the community together in a positive way.”
