General information about the incident:   tarted as an outside fire, which went up outside wall into eaves of attic and spread across the attic. Occupants at home were told that the outside of house was on fire by neighbors. People attempted to put the fire out using fire extinguishers. Fire traveled across attic and fell into living area of the house. Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental, they believe that cans of paint and other chemical left out in the sunlight may have started the fire. Several cans of paint were found in the area where the fire started. Occupants will be staying with friends.

Other Las Vegas homes have sustained extensive damage because of the same circumstances in the past. Cans of chemicals and paint left exposed in direct sunlight can heat up to very high temperatures and cause the pressurized cans to explode and the flammable liquids of the paints and thinners to catch fire. They should be stored in a proper container or cabinet that is out of direct sunlight. This includes containers of gasoline, propane, any type of flammable liquid, paints, thinners, pool chemicals, insecticides, bags of barbecue charcoal and tars. Read the caution or advisory label on each container for instructions on proper and safe storage.
