General information about the incident:  A middle-aged man who sustained critical burns in a fire Tuesday afternoon died late Tuesday night in the burn unit at University Medical Center. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire investigators believe the fire was accidental. Identity of the victim is not being released pending notification to next of kin. This is the fourth fire fatality in the city this year.

An LVFR Fire Inspector was driving through the area and noticed what he thought was a rubbish fire behind a fiberglass unit on Commerce Street and radioed the report in to fire dispatch. When he looked again, he saw a middle-aged male standing practically in the fire, and he yelled for him to get out. The man moved back and collapsed on the ground. A fire unit arrived on scene and found two mattresses, a couple boxes of clothing items and a small amount of trash along with the fiberglass shed heavily involved with fire.

The man, who was badly burned, was immediately taken to UMC in a Fire & Rescue ambulance. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There was a large amount of smoking material found in the area of the fire origin, which was behind the fiberglass shed where two mattresses lay on the ground. People who work in the area told fire officials that the man, who they say was homeless, stayed there at night.

The incident is under investigation by Las Vegas fire investigators and Metro Police.
