City Proclaims June 27 As National HIV Testing Day
City Also Receives Leadership In Government Award From The Nevada Human Rights Campaign

During the ceremonial portion of tomorrow’s Las Vegas City Council meeting, which will take place at 9 a.m. in City Hall council chambers, located at 400 Stewart Ave., Mayor Oscar B. Goodman will recognize Friday, June 27, as National HIV Testing Day. The designation is part of the national Mayors Campaign Against HIV. The city of Las Vegas is working with the Southern Nevada Health District and Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) to offer more than 500 free rapid HIV tests to the community.

Mayor Goodman will also present a Key to the City to an exchange student for outstanding community service. Jens Koschel, who is from Berlin, Germany, has participated in numerous volunteer projects during his stay in Las Vegas. He has taken part in food drives, read to local kindergarten students, organized fundraising efforts for the Clark High School band and volunteered for several political events, hoping to learn more about the United States government.

Mayor Goodman will also recognize several young men who are successfully participating in the Boys Hope Girls Hope program. The program helps academically capable and motivated children-in-need to meet their full potential by providing value-centered, family-like homes, opportunities and education through college.

The City Council will also recognize city employee Mary McKinney for being named the PAL program Job Site Supervisor of the Year. The Partnership At Las Vegas (PAL) program provides an opportunity for students at Las Vegas High School to work as unpaid interns at job sites throughout the valley. Through the internships, students earn credit toward high school graduation. McKinney was chosen from more than 150 job site supervisors for her support of the program.

Councilman Steve Wolfson will recognize June as Pedestrian Safety Month. Investigator Bill Redfairn with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s traffic division will attend the meeting to accept a proclamation and talk about the importance of both pedestrian and motorist awareness of pedestrian laws.

The city will also be presented with the Leadership in Government Award from the Nevada Human Rights Campaign. The city is receiving the award because of its contributions to the continuing fight for equality through the implementation of its domestic partner program in 2006.

Finally, the city will recognize the June Employee of the Month and the Team of the Quarter. Julie Ray, the June Employee of the Month, is a Graphic Artist II with the Planning and Development Department and has been with the city since 2006. The Team of the Quarter, made up of Claudia Lopez, Jorge Morteo and Fred Solis, are also employees with the city’s Planning and Development Department. The three created a local Latinos and Planning Division, which is part of a national group that focuses on urban planning issues in Latino communities and on career challenges facing Latino planners.
