Heavy flames and smoke showing from an upstairs apartment when firefighters arrived. Even with heavy fire conditions, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in less than 10 minutes and confine most of the damage to the apartment of origin.  Approximately 35 people were evacuated from the apartment building, which has 20 units and was built in 1963. One person was injured when they fell and hurt their face during the evacuation prior to the fire department’s arrival. The fire has been ruled accidental, the result of a child playing with a lighter that set a couch on fire while she was watching TV and her father was asleep. She was upset about what she did and was sorry. When she admitted doing it, her father was so upset, that it aggravated a pre-existing medical condition and he had to be transported to the hospital for treatment. The family of two lost everything. Other residents were able to return to their apartments within the hour.
