Economic Stimulus Details Provided On City of Las Vegas Web Site
City Has Applied For $223 Million In ARRA Funds

The city of Las Vegas recently developed a page on its Web site devoted to information about the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), more commonly referred to as the economic stimulus.

This site provides information on grant opportunities that the city of Las Vegas is pursuing as part of ARRA. Web site visitors will be able to:

  • Access open bid opportunities available online through the city’s Purchasing Division
  • Identify grants submitted and received by participating city departments
  • Explore available resources for research and reporting requirements
  • Obtain details on grant awards made to the city of Las Vegas
  • Gain insight on grant management oversight by the mayor and the city council

These details can be accessed at: www.lasvegasnevada.gov/ARRA.

“We felt it was critical to provide a starting point for those interested in learning more about how the economic stimulus funds are being used,” said Romeo Betea, business development manager for the city’s Office of Business Development.  Betea is also serving as the coordinator for the city’s economic stimulus efforts.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was signed into law by President Barack Obama on Feb. 17, 2009. Of the $787 billion in total ARRA funding provided nationally, approximately $135 billion is being made available to state and local governments throughout the U.S. via competitive/discretionary or formula grants. The city of Las Vegas has applied for $223 million in ARRA funds and has been awarded $11 million so far.

Of this $135 billion federal allotment, Nevada’s portion is $2.2 billion. A federal formula was used to determine this amount. Nevada state government will, in turn, provide potential funding for communities throughout the state. In addition, eligible Nevada communities will be able to apply for other competitive federal grant funds.
