City Of Las Vegas Cultural Arts & Community Events Feb. 8-14
Enjoy Valentine Dance at Charleston Heights Arts Center Feb. 13

 

Adults are invited to enjoy the St. Valentine’s Day Dance on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. The evening of dancing and listening to music from the Golden Age of Swing performed by The Gene White Octet and Swing Patrol begins at 7 p.m. The band will play tunes made famous by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman; romantic standards from the ‘50s and ‘60s; cha chas, tangos and other popular dances of the era. Tickets are priced at $10 in advance and $12 on event day. Call the center at 229-6383 for tickets and information.

Free Business Seminars Offered To Local Business Owners (adults)
Thursday, Feb. 11, 9 to 10 a.m. 
Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St.
This one-hour seminar, the second in a series of four to be held in February, will focus on Basic QuickBooks training. Sponsored by the city of Las Vegas Office of Business Development, in conjunction with the Adam Hodson CPA firm, the free seminar is limited to 40 people. Advance registration is required. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 229-6862 to register.

Rainbow Company Theatre Presents “Unsung Characters of Nevada’s Past” (all ages)
Feb. 11, 12 and 13 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 13 and 14 at 2 p.m.
Tickets: $7 adults; $5 teens, seniors; $3 children age 12 and younger

This 50-minute original new musical tells stories from the early years of Las Vegas, focusing on the characters of Walter Bracken, Pop Squires, Helen J. Stewart, Roy Martin and Mary Nettles. These characters were important in the development of the city, but many of today’s residents have no idea who they were or how they helped Las Vegas grow.
 
“Las Vegas Perspective: Reflections of the African-American Artist” Exhibit (all ages)
Feb. 12-April 23, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed holidays.
Free admission.

The works in the exhibit will highlight local African-American artists and are being presented in honor of Black History month. Artists that will be exhibited are: Abraham Abebe, Dayo Adelaja, Harold Bradford, Sylvester Collier, Lolita Develay, Vicki Richardson, Lance Smith, Mario Smith, and Joseph Watson. Visitors may reach the gallery through the second floor of the Las Vegas City Hall parking garage on the southeast corner of Stewart Avenue and Fourth Street. Parking is by paid meter only. Free Symphony Park Lecture Series: The Smith Center for the Performing Arts
Wednesday, Feb. 10, 5 p.m.

Enjoy a panel discussion and presentation on The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. This free public lecture will focus on the economic, community and quality-of-life benefits that will be created by our city’s new performing arts center that also will be the cornerstone of Symphony Park. Panelists will include The Smith Center team of Chairman of the Board Don Snyder; Chief Executive Officer Myron Martin; Chief Financial Officer Rick Johnson; and the newest member, Chief Operating Officer Paul Beard. Beard is a seasoned theater manager who has more than 20 years experience in the performing arts industry. For more information, call 220-8090.
 
Dexter Park Rededication Celebration (all ages)
Saturday, Feb. 13, noon to 2 p.m.
Dexter Park, Upland Boulevard north of West Charleston Boulevard
Dog owners are invited to bring their furry fashionistas to strut their stuff at the Love Your Pup Costume Parade at noon. Prizes and bragging rights will go to the dogs outfitted as the cutest little pup, cutest large pup, super-sized, most unique, blue collar and overall. Serving as grand marshals will be Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman and Ward 1 Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian. Other fun will include doggie dish and Valentine decorating. This free event will highlight renovations to the dog run and playground at Dexter Park. The 4.7-acre park also has picnic areas, a baseball field, and basketball and tennis courts.
