Residents age 50 and older are invited to celebrate their fondness for chocolate in all its wonderful forms at the Chocolate Festival on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. For only $4 per person, participants may sample cheesecake, brownies, candies, cakes, pastries and fountains made with their favorite sweet, as well as other food designed to accompany the rich feast. Free City of Las Vegas Chinese New Year Celebration 2010 - Year of the Tiger Wednesday, Feb. 17, 8:30 to 9 a.m. City Hall Plaza, 400 Stewart Ave. In celebration of Chinese New Year and as part of the City of Las Vegas diversity initiative, the Lohan School of Shaolin lion dancers will perform in the City Hall plaza prior to the start of the City Council meeting. The Lion Dance is meant to ring in wealth and prosperity in the New Year and scare away evil spirits. During the Council meeting, Councilman Steve Wolfson will recognize the Lohan School of Shaolin for their dedication to promote Asian culture and arts for more than 15 years in Las Vegas.

Admission is free. Calisto (Juan Diego Botto) is a young knight who has fallen madly in love with Melibea (Penelope Cruz). Failing to win her, Calisto is goaded by his servant to seek the help of the sorceress Celestina. Another servant, Parmeno, tries to dissuade his master from resorting to the witch, but to no avail. Determined to woo Melibea, the lovesick Romeo pays the old woman to work her magic, touching off a string of events with dire consequences. The Cine en el Centro Spanish-language film series is presented by the city of Las Vegas, Cox Communications, VeneMovies, Venevision International, La Nueva 103.5 FM, Recuerdo 99.3 FM, Radio Variedades 870 AM, Tortillas Los Arcos and El Mercadito. The movies, all award-winning, blockbuster films from Latin America and Spain, have been donated by VeneMovies and Venevision International to provide cultural enrichment to the Hispanic community. Downtown Cultural Series — Chautauqua Portrayal of Madame C.J. Walker (all ages) Friday, Feb. 19, noon to 1 p.m. Free admission. Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse Jury Assembly Room, 333 Las Vegas Boulevard South Juanita Westbrook will portray Madame C.J. Walker and provide entertaining insight on the first African-American millionaire businesswoman. Walker invented new hair care products and a cosmetics line for African- American women. In 1905, she patented a straightening comb. The popularity of her products grew rapidly. Walker employed and trained young women to sell her products door to door and she employed 3,000 workers in a factory that occupied an entire Denver city block. Also included are the Chicano poetry of featured guest artist Frijol Boy and a collection of his own eccentric artwork. This program contains material that parents may find unsuitable for children.
