Councilman Steven D. Ross and the city of Las Vegas invite Las Vegas residents to celebrate spring at the multicultural festival in Ward 6 that will offer plenty of old-fashioned family fun. “The World in Your Backyard” multicultural festival will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, in Centennial Hills Park at 7101 N. Buffalo Drive. Festival admission and activities are free. Many performers will entertain on the main stage of the park amphitheatre, including Tevaka Nui (Polynesian Hula Halau), John Bear Lozano (traditional Native American flute player), Las Vegas Paiute Tribal Dancers (traditional Native American dance), Kaminari Taiko Drummers (traditional Japanese drumming), Xyachimal (traditional Mexican folkloric dance) and Hasani Palacio (traditional African drumming and dance). Make-it-and-take-it children’s craft workshops will be offered in sand art, African mask painting, Mexican paper flower making, Chinese dragon making, teepee painting, and the making of Indian feathers and corn husk dolls. A variety of community groups will offer ethnic foods for sale, including traditional Indian fried bread and desserts, Navajo tacos, and traditional Mexican, Japanese and American cuisines. Native American flutes and crafts, as well as traditional Mexican, Japanese and Polynesian crafts also will be displayed and available for purchase. Series curator Luis Bonilla will present a short introduction of the featured film, “La Ley de Herodes” at 6 p.m. After the screening, Bonilla will lead a discussion on the film in Spanish. It's 1949, and following the brutal murder of a small Mexican town's mayor, the genteel and humble Juan Vargas (Damian Alcazar), a janitor, is appointed his successor. But in spite of his efforts to steer clear of corruption, Juan finally succumbs to the allure of dirty politics, emerging as a man with few scruples and deep grudges. The Cine en el Centro Spanish-language film series is presented by the city of Las Vegas, Cox Communications, VeneMovies, Venevision International, La Nueva 103.5 FM, Recuerdo 99.3 FM, Radio Variedades 870 AM, Tortillas Los Arcos and El Mercadito. The movies, all award-winning, blockbuster films from Latin America and Spain, have been donated by VeneMovies and Venevision International to provide cultural enrichment to the Hispanic community. The dances may be lively and joyful or gentle and graceful. From the first chord to the final bow or curtsey, dancers are inspired by the driving reels, jaunty jigs, snappy strathspeys or lilting slow airs. And thanks to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, any dancer can be welcomed by a local group almost anywhere in the world.
