Everyone is invited to enjoy an old-time contra dance on Saturday, April 17, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. Dance to the live music of an acoustic band playing joyful fiddle tunes, driving reels, circle mixers and a waltz or two. This lively community dance recaptures aspects of New England and frontier barn dances, with more modern twists. All dances are taught and called. Newcomers and families are welcomed. Cosponsored by the city of Las Vegas and the Southern Nevada Old-Time Contra Dancers, the event offers an introductory group lesson at 6:30 p.m. Dance tickets are priced at $7 for adults; $5 for members, students and active military; and $3 for children. Cine En El Centro Film Series Feature “Soñar No Cuesta Nada” Thursday, April 15, 6 p.m. introduction, 6:30 p.m. feature presentation Admission is free. Series curator Luis Bonilla will present a short introduction of the featured film, “Soñar No Cuesta Nada” at 6 p.m. After the screening, Bonilla will lead a discussion on the film in Spanish. Based on a true story, this action-packed comedy follows four overworked Colombian soldiers who stumble upon $46 million while on a rescue mission in the jungle. They decide to keep the cash for themselves rather than turn it in to the government. With their only route home destroyed by rebels, the soldiers work feverishly to get back to civilization so they can take advantage of their newfound fortune. The Cine en el Centro Spanish-language film series is presented by the city of Las Vegas, Cox Communications, VeneMovies, Venevision International, La Nueva 103.5 FM, Recuerdo 99.3 FM, Radio Variedades 870 AM, Tortillas Los Arcos and El Mercadito. The movies, all award-winning, blockbuster films from Latin America and Spain, have been donated by VeneMovies and Venevision International to provide cultural enrichment to the Hispanic community. This class is not suitable for younger children unless they have previous dance experience. Scottish Country Dancing is the beautiful “ballroom” dance of Scotland. The dances may be lively and joyful or gentle and graceful. From the first chord to the final bow or curtsey, dancers are inspired by the driving reels, jaunty jigs, snappy strathspeys or lilting slow airs. And thanks to the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, any dancer can be welcomed by a local group almost anywhere in the world.
