City Of Las Vegas Cultural Arts & Community Events May 3-9
Latin Breeze Salsa Dance Concert May 8 At East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center

 

Everyone is invited to the Latin Breeze Salsa Dance Concert on Saturday, May 8, from 8 to 11 p.m. at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, located at 250 N. Eastern Ave. A free salsa dance workshop will be offered at 7 p.m. Latin Breeze will play favorite danceable Latin music along with its own original compositions. Members hail from three continents and five countries. Tickets for the dance are on sale at $10 in advance and $15 on May 8. For tickets and information, call 229-1515.

The band's members include Willie Tanon (vocals and percussion), Cecilia Perez (vocals), Ben Sena (saxophone, flute and piccolo), Marco Cossio (percussion and vocals), Joseph Santiago (percussion), Rick Arroyo (piano), Rob Mader (saxophone), Gil Kaupp (trumpet), Dwight Smith (trombone), Tom Delibro (trumpet) and Steve Ramirez (bass). Latin Breeze has shared the stage with some big names in Latin music, including Tito Puente, Eddie Palmiere, Puerto Rican Power and Tito Rojas. This concert is presented by the city of Las Vegas with support from La Nueva 103.5 FM, Recuerdo 99.3 FM and Radio Variedades 870 AM.

High School Basketball League (Boys and Girls, ages 14-18)
Begins Monday, May 3. Advance registration is required.
Fee: $250 per team, plus $22 per game, per team. Free for spectators.

Middle School Basketball League (Boys and Girls, ages 12-14)
Begins Tuesday, May 4. Advance registration is required.
Fee: $250 per team, plus $17 per game, per team. Free for spectators.

Eight-game schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays, followed by single-elimination tournament.

Catch the Ethnic Express for an international evening of fun! Dances include Armenian, Bulgarian, Chinese, Greek, Russian, Serbian and Turkish, to name a few.

Free G.L.O. Festival Joins First Friday Celebration
Friday, May 7, 6 to 10 p.m.
On South Casino Center Boulevard between Charleston Boulevard and East California Street
The Global Light Objects (G.L.O.) Festival joins the First Friday celebration in the downtown Arts District. This free event, a celebration of light, visual arts, music, performance and great company, takes place along with other regularly scheduled events of First Friday Las Vegas, presented monthly by Whirlygig. G.L.O Festival highlights will include:

  • Artist Invitational with Anthony Bondi, Denise Duarte, Miguel Rodriguez, Todd Von Bastiaans and K. D. Matheson
  • Music on the city stage with the Lon Bronson All Star Band
  • Improv on the street with a special appearance by the Steam Powered Giraffes, a roving musical pantomime
  • 10 Years of Burning Man, a street-side film screening at dusk on the giant screen
  • Arts + Community: a dozen local arts organizations under the big top tent, including the city of Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs, Las Vegas Arts Commission, Metro Arts, the Cultural Corridor, Clark County Cultural Division, Vegas Valley Book Festival and others, will offer information on local arts resources.
  • A remembrance of the Las Vegas Centennial’s 100 Mural Project of five years ago 
  • The Spontaneous G.L.O. Parade: Join a glowing conga line wearing your best light costume.

On Boulder Plaza at Main Street and Boulder Avenue: 

  • Artist Invitational with Todd Dwayne Miller, Barbara and Larry Domsky, Montana Black, Linda Whitehair, Mario Smith and Jerry Misko
  • Performing live:  the Rocky Gordon Duo

Angel Park Trail Opening (all ages)

Durango Drive at Washington Avenue
The Las Vegas City Council invites you to join Councilmen Steve Wolfson and Stavros S. Anthony for the Angel Park Trail and Trailhead opening. Bring the family and park your vehicle near the Darling Tennis Center (Durango Drive at Washington Avenue) and join the councilmen at the Kellogg Zaher park tunnel at 9 a.m. for a fitness walk on the trail to the new trailhead. Pets on leashes are welcome. There is a children’s play area at the trailhead, located, on the west side of Durango Drive at Westcliff Drive. Trails extend northeast from the trailhead along Durango to Bruce Trent Park on Vegas Drive and southwest to wrap around the city’s Angel Park, across Rampart Boulevard, continuing along the south side of the Angel Park Golf Course and ending at Alta Drive. 1st Annual Community CultureFest (all ages)
Saturday, May 8, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Free admission and activities. Refreshments and merchandise available for sale.
Doolittle Community Center and Doolittle Park, 1950 N. J St. at Lake Mead Boulevard, and the West Las Vegas Arts Center Amphitheatre, 947 Lake Mead Blvd.
This festival has fun activities for everyone. Bring the family for open swimming from noon to 4 p.m. Carnival games, jump house, face painting, 3-on-3 basketball tournament, contests, bike and car show, vendor booths and demonstrations. Special guest performers are scheduled throughout the day at the West Las Vegas Arts Center outdoor amphitheatre. Pick up health and wellness information, too! This annual event is always a full house, so make your reservations early! A catered lunch by At Your Service Catering, with a no-host bar, precedes a dance featuring familiar standards of the Big Band era by one of Las Vegas’ popular bands. Advance purchase is required. Seating is limited.
