Everyone is invited to enjoy an evening of elegant Regency Era English and Scottish country dancing inspired by Jane Austen and her world on Saturday, May 15, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, located at 800 S. Brush St. Live music will be provided by The English Roses band. Light refreshments will be served during the break. Tickets are priced at $12. The dance is cosponsored by the city of Las Vegas and the Southern Nevada Old-Time Contra Dancers. Evening dress is requested. Clothing from the lifetime of Jane Austen (1775-1817) is appreciated, but not required. Please don't let a lack of period attire dissuade you from attending. Fireworks will immediately follow the parade. The Helldorado carnival will begin each night at 5 p.m. at the rodeo grounds. Scottish country dancing is the beautiful "ballroom" dance of Scotland and may be lively and joyful or gentle and graceful. From the first chord to the final bow or curtsey, participants will be inspired by the driving reels, jaunty jigs, snappy strathspeys or lilting slow airs. Dancers should wear comfortable clothes and soft shoes (such as gillies, ballet slippers or jazz shoes). Ladies will find that skirts help them to enjoy the natural flow of the dance. Matting Workshop (ages 10-adult) Saturday, May 15, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd., (702) 229-4800. This demonstration and hands-on workshop will teach beginners basic matting techniques, such as measuring, cutting and mounting two-dimensional work to backing materials. There is no charge to participants; they just need to bring their own piece of two-dimensional artwork and a frame of their choice. All other items, including mat boards, mat cutting equipment and incidental materials will be made available. Advance reservation is advised. This program is funded by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council.
