The city of Las Vegas is offering a new Lifeguard Training Course for $125 from January through May at the Municipal Pool, 431 E. Bonanza Road, or Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive. The course also will be offered June through August at the outdoor Baker Pool. The course is required for those who wish to be employed as lifeguards. Those who successfully complete the course will receive an American Red Cross Universal Certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, which is valid for two years. The city of Las Vegas will offer an employment opportunity to qualified graduates of the lifeguarding course.
Participants must be at least 15 years old and must pass prerequisite skills on the first day of class. The course is approximately 25.5 hours in length. Participants must attend all class sessions and successfully complete the requirements to receive certification. Valid job fair and referral $10 discount coupons can be used for a discount off the registration price. The coupon must be presented at the time of registration. No refunds are given if the participant fails the course or fails to attend. There is a minimum of six registrants required for each course. A pocket mask must be purchased prior to the first class meeting. Participants may now download and print the lifeguarding manual, and must do so prior to the first class meeting. It is still an option to purchase, as well. Purchase or print at www.shopstaywell.com/ or www.redcrossstore.org/.
Prerequisite skills include:
- 300-yard continuous swim (12 lengths of pool) in combination of front crawl and breaststroke.
- Treading water for two minutes using only the legs, with hands under the armpits.
- Swim 20 yards, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick, return to surface, swim with brick to starting point, exit water without ladder, all within 100 seconds.
For those that are unsure of passing the lifeguarding prerequisites, there is a two-week Pre-Lifeguarding Skills course offered several times, beginning in January. Classes for American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor, Water Safety Instructor, and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers also are available.
Details on class dates, times, locations, costs, and registration are available in the or by calling (702) 229-6309. Advance registration is required for all classes.
